If people want to know what happens when things get ever so slightly better, just check out the reports and conference calls for FedEx and Discover Financial Services, both of which were much better than I figured they could deliver.
First, Discover should have blown up, as its credit controls were not considered strong going into the quarter, plus implementation of the credit card law could have been expected to hammer them. Instead the quarter was pretty darned good, with the velocity of loan losses slowing and the net interest margin fabulous -- a prelude of what's to come for the banks.
They company took out a lot of costs and didn't get hurt by the credit card act, perhaps because the act cut back on reckless market-share gathering that comes from teaser rates. It looks like -- I can't believe I am writing this -- but...
