Blown away by the Wal-Mart back-to-school commentary. "Back-to-college sales are running mid-double digits ahead of last year"? Wal-Mart International's head says back-to-school sales are "extremely encouraging"? Huh? What's this? Something positive about the back-to-school season right after it was supposed to be canceled? Didn't the media tell us that back-to-school was postponed until 2010? Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer. One hundred million people shop there each week. This is not Urban Outfitters. It is not Aeropostale. It is not Buckle. I find these quotes amazing. Now, I know how you could spin this negative. Wal-Mart also admitted that it is taking share away from others. So, someone could argue that this is zero-sum, too. But I was thinking about less than zero going into this season, brainwashed by a media that has made up its mind about school sales pretty much right at the time of graduation....
