
Look Out, Shorts: Tech Is Going Up

I heard it the other day, the word I feared the most when I was shorting, the word that begins with an "a" that means numbers are way too low: allocation.
NAND Flash? On allocation. Buy SanDisk, buy it aggressively. Goes much higher.
DRAMS? Can't get 'em. Raising prices -- buy Micron.
Drives? Components in short supply, buy Western Digital and Seagate Technology.
It is happening. It hasn't happened since the 1990s, and because there is no slack in the system, because so many people have been laid off, because nobody believed that business could turn this fast, because the products are in demand cycles, many, many tech components are on allocation.
When I used to run my hedge fund and I heard that something was on allocation, I reached for calls on all strikes. I knew that it would be forever before new equipment could come on to...
