Comcast reported a solid quarter with revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) largely in line with estimates, while EPS and free cash flow were better than expected. Subscriber growth metrics were much better than expected but still way off levels of a few years ago. Revenue growth of 3% and EBITDA growth of 2.7% suggest that Comcast has minimal core growth, but the upside is that capital spending needs are slowing markedly, leading to free cash flow growth of 20% in the quarter.
Management stated it well on the conference call when it noted that the company faces a balancing act between revenue growth, subscriber growth and free cash flow growth.
