Colgate Palmolive is up nicely today but is lagging the overall market after an uneventful earnings report. Procter & Gamble is surging ahead and may be sucking the oxygen out of the room for CL investors. Earnings per share of $1.12 beat by a penny, with revenue slightly ahead of the Street at $3.998 billion but flat year over year. Organic sales growth of 7% was driven by 2% volume growth and 5% pricing, but most of that growth was offset by foreign exchange effects.
Gross margins were strong, up more than 300 basis points from the year-ago period. Management noted that it had taken pricing action to offset commodity inflation and foreign exchange impacts, but margins gains won't be returned via price cuts now that inflation is subsiding.
