The company is expected to earn 59 cents per share on net revenue of $7.31 billion. In the year-ago period, American Express earned 90 cents per share on net revenue of $6.95 billion. I would note that just in the past week consensus estimates for the credit card and travel services company have declined by 5 cents. Recall that in July American Express reported a truly horrible quarter when it posted EPS of 56 cents, missing consensus estimates by nearly one-third. American Express is clearly hurting from the current economic slowdown. Business travel is being severely curtailed with the loss of financial services corporate travel quite apparent.
