
Barclays Plans 'Genocide-Free' ETF

Socially responsible investment vehicles have traditionally avoided companies involved in the production of cigarettes and alcohol, gambling and other such pursuits or products. Barclays Global Investors' iShares, however, is taking the idea of socially responsible investing (SRI) to a whole new level. According to Reuters, the firm is currently in the planning stages of releasing what it refers to as the first genocide-free exchange traded fund.
The fund is being created at a time when asset managers are coming under increasing pressure to shy away from regions or companies linked to human rights abuses, war crimes and worse. Barclays will rely on an as yet unnamed third-party provider to name and shame those companies in which the fund won't be investing, Reuters said.
