Nobody has any idea what's going on at Goldman Sachs. I think the sense is that GS will have a huge loss, far bigger than the analysts think, or else it wouldn't be laying people off so aggressively. They also seem to think that the book value is bogus and that the firm is on the hook to something we don't know about. There's also a belief that it put private equity money to work at the high. And they don't have any deposits to fall back on. Those are the negatives.
