I have been championing this one for a long time, but more important, I felt that the quarter was so much better than the Street thought, with the only real negative being the one that has been endlessly prepped for. Endlessly. The whole point of every move that Chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg has made is to be ready for the sharp drop-off of landlines.
Think about it: The company has pioneered texting, a growth business, out of nowhere. It has been at the forefront of every smartphone initiative. It has rolled out -- at what was supposed to be the worst time possible -- a major TV initiative. It is totally in sync with this new government's plan for broadband expansion. It bought Alltel when it could buy Alltel, before the new administration came in and shut down...
