Amid the swirl of retailer angst in this market environment, Amazon posted stand-out earnings that are driving the stock up a couple percent in after-hours trading. Earnings per share of 41 cents beat the Street by 10 cents (a 33% surprise, quite meaningful) on revenue of $4.89 billion, 18% growth that handily beat the consensus as well. Investors showed some initial consternation regarding next quarter's guidance, in which management bracketed a somewhat lower revenue range and gave an operating income range significantly below current consensus. Specifically, management sees second-quarter operating income of $110 million to $190 million vs. a consensus estimate of $172 million. Despite the rather weak guidance, investors are ultimately embracing the fact that Amazon could grow revenue 18% in a dour economic environment -- and 21% in North America, no less!
