
Banks Stall, Insurers Rally

Will Hartford count as a bank? After the bell, it guided book value up, which means that the company's just too cheap at $27. But then again, Principal and Lincoln reported fine numbers, and so did Genworth. Didn't change a thing to the banking group.
Which is odd. Because despite the endless disparagement of commercial real estate, including the "bombshell" comments from Wilbur Ross, these companies are huge holders of that very asset class.
That means that either these companies dumped the stuff and are looking smart, or they kept the stuff and the negativity's misplaced. Can't be both.
Hartford has a very clean property casualty business that is worth $36 in solid book. Given that the company's raising book value to that level, it means that the rest of the company's valuation is no longer minus.
Maybe that's the best news of all.
