 In 2007, over $45 billion in 59 coal-fired power plant projects were delayed or canceled. The latest victim, on Jan. 12, was a new coal power plant in Ely, Iowa, planned by Dynegy and LS Power. They had also planned to develop coal plants in Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, Iowa and Nevada but dissolved their partnership. Dynegy stock rose 19% on the news and the perception that it is pulling out of new coal power plant development. This is known in the investigative business as a clue. On Jan. 16, the Long Now Foundation sponsored a seminar in San Francisco on what it would take to level off atmospheric carbon dioxide at 450 ppm (parts per million), currently 385 ppm.
