So much of this business is counterintuitive. We have heard forever that the money on the sidelines is staying on the sidelines or going into bonds. Suddenly we see gigantic equity inflows into ETFs -- $7.8 billion -- and moves make sense to me.
Take Merck. Nothing but bad news here. It loses to Abbott on a head-to-head test of anti-cholesterol drugs, and it probably will show no new positives on Zetia. The stock's rally doesn't make sense when you consider the news flow. That means, to me, money in.
Or Boeing. There is nothing new or good to report in Boeing. Nothing. It is simply a dead weight with problems after problems, and it now seems that the chances of the Dreamliner lifting off anytime soon are nil. But what's happening with the stock? It is rallying, too.
