It has been only a few months, but I am yearning to return to the analysis of company performance and future prospects. Instead, investors are spending virtually 100% of their time trying to make sense of the government stimulus and bailouts, TARP and TARP 2. This may continue for some time, because I believe that massive government spending financed by debt will not turn this economy around. There was a brief ray of hope for the housing market last week when the Senate version of the stimulus plan added a $15,000 tax credit for anyone buying a home to be used as a principal residence. But somehow in conference committee, this provision was reduced to $8,000 and was made usable only by first-time homebuyers. Because the housing market decline was largely responsible for many of the current problems, I felt that a provision that would stabilize housing...
