Family Dollar reported its first-quarter 2009 results thus morning, with earnings of 42 cents per share coming in 2 cents ahead of consensus and revenue of $1.754 billion slightly below the analyst estimate of $1.756 billion. Comps of 2.1% were impacted by one less week due to Thanksgiving. December's results (the first month of the company's fiscal second quarter 2009) were very strong relative to the economy: comp's of +6% were very strong and contributed to the upside in q2 2009 guidance. More important for Family Dollar was second-quarter and full-year 2009 EPS guidance. Management guided between 48 cents and 52 cents in EPS for the second quarter (and comps between 3% and 5%) while the consensus coming into the call was for 48 cents.
